Recently I ticked an activity off my ever growing to-do list and walked the Cuilcagh Legnabrocky Trail in Fermanagh, also known as the Stairway to Heaven. What was meant to be a day trip to do this mountain walk ended up becoming a night away – and little did I know that I was going to be surprised with a stay on Lusty Beg Island!
Lusty Beg is a resort on Boa Island on Lough Erne in Fermanagh. This resort is nothing short of amazing even before you get on it. There are plenty islands out there that you can drive on via bridge, but this is not one of them! To get on this island you must take a ferry across (it takes no more than two minutes from end to end, but it is still a thrill!)
Once on the island you have little or no reason to leave. The activities on the island are amazing, from archery and 4×4 off road driving to relaxing in their spa and getting treatments. It really has something for everyone here – one of the reasons I wanted to go there so much. We ended up taking out a canoe for an hour (which only costs £10 per canoe!) and even though I was terrified it was still a really nice experience.
The spa is out of this world. Their heated pool is inside what looks like a wooden barn with bare walls and wooden lats along the ceiling. I think the description really doesn’t do it justice because it creates such a unique atmosphere. Not your thing? They also have a hot tub outside to warm up and relax in! I didn’t bring my phone to the pool with me so the below image is from their website – but trust me when I say this is exactly how it looks in real life, if not better!
The resort itself offers a range of different accommodations. We stayed in one of their regular rooms but they also have Chalets, Cabins, Lodges and Apartments to choose from when staying. We only just managed to grab a room the night before due to a cancellation, but if you want to book a place here I suggest you book ahead!
You can grab lunch, dinner as well as drinks on the Island. There was a wedding as well as a hen party there on the night we stayed so the atmosphere was absolutely amazing. There are an abundance of tables in the restaurant area and bar but if the weather is nice you can also sit outdoors and enjoy the view of the lough. Breakfast is self service which is in the same area and they really tick all the boxes here!
I am an advocate for hostels and B&B’s usually because I find they are more friendly as well as being more cost effective. For me when I stay over it is purely somewhere to sleep at night after adventuring further a-field but but Lusty Beg is more than a place to lay your head – it’s somewhere where you could spend your entire day and not get bored! This is somewhere I have wanted to stay for so, so long and when I finally got the chance I am happy to report that it didn’t disappoint! (I must include a big thank you to the boyfriend for setting it all up for me as well, he knows me well!)
Would you like to stay in Lusty Begs? Or have you stayed somewhere similar before?
